Dog Parks…good fun or an accident waiting to happen?

A few months back my girls (Alley, a British Golden Retriever and Caley, a Bichon Frise) and I decided to visit a local dog park with a friend. To those of you that have never ventured into a dog park, it is usually an enclosed area where dogs are permitted to run off-leash while their owners mingle amongst themselves.

Immediately after arriving, Alley was bowled over by a large rambunctious German Shepherd mix. The dog’s owner never came to control the dog as it continued to run over other dogs in the park as well. Devastated, Alley stuck to my side and would not mingle with the other dogs – one of the main reasons for a dog park! Caley, I’m sure after seeing her sister assaulted, decided to stay in my lap the entire time.

I feel that there is a genuine lack of responsibility from owners of pets that are not “ideal” social pets. They seem to deny their pet’s aggressive behavior and the fact that they can not control their pet. Because of this, dog parks can be a bit hazardous. Before taking your dog to a dog park, be sure to scout out the area, ask if there is a temperament test prior to being allowed into the park and always make sure your pet is protected from any diseases that they may catch in this type of setting.

I prefer a good day care where the dogs are under constant supervision, combined with other dogs the same size, and are allowed a place to get away from all the excitement. This makes me feel more comfortable and the girls seem so much happier.

Remember, it only takes one snap to make a great day out with your pet turn into a nightmare. ~ Nancy

Pets Living Longer

I've just read a wonderful article on how pets are living longer these days.  My cat, Ghost, is now 16yrs old and he doesn't act a day over 5.  For many ages no one even knew that dogs and cats can suffer from diseases that only advanced years would ever manifest.

Arthritis, kidney failure, cancer, and senility are concerns for the modern pet that pets of yesteryear never even had the opportunity to experience.  Because of this trend, care for our aging pets is more important than ever.  Preventative care is more essential and pet insurance is absolutely needed.  Please take the time to read this article because hopefully it will prepare you for a long life with your pet!

Great Little Game

For those that know their dog breeds (or at least think they do), here is a cute little game I found on Animal Planet!  Good Luck!

What's Your Pet's Way of Getting Attention?

One endearing trait of pets everywhere is their way to show love by just a simple nuzzle of the hand or a flat out body slam! No matter how your pet does it, they all show affection somehow and when they do, your heart will just melt.

My British Golden, Alley, will come up, sit right in front of me (to get the best angle of course) and then out stretch her front paws as if asking for a hug. If I am lying on the floor with Alley, she will instantly put one of her arms over one of mine! My Bichon goes for a more direct approach by just rolling over to have her belly rubbed. She won’t leave my side no matter where we go.
